50 Best WCW Moments Ever
30. Terry Funk Feels Insulted
Terry Funk joined Jim Ross on commentary for WrestleWar 1989. Together, the pair applauded a tremendous clash between Flair and Steamboat that ended with Ric beating Ricky to seize back the NWA Title. It was half an hour of world class grappling, but Flair had enough energy to cut a promo putting Steamboat over post-match.
That's when Funk suddenly announced he wanted to challenge Ric for the strap. Flair was respectful, but said no because Terry had been in Hollywood for a few years and wasn't on the "top 10" list of contenders. Funk continued prodding and getting rebuffed, then grew heated by the thought that Flair didn't respect him.
This led to a sensational ambush and their match at the Great American Bash. Seriously, if you've never seen Terry pleading for a title shot before losing his cool, then you need to watch it. Today's wrestlers should study how he plausibly went from heartfelt to embarrassed then hate-filled too. This one promo set a new blueprint for how to go from gentle babyface announcer to violent, rampaging psychopath out for blood.
