50 Fascinating Facts About WWE in The 1980s
47. Sheik Was Also The First ‘Modern’ WWE Champ
The World Wrestling Federation wouldn't sit idly by as contented members of the National Wrestling Alliance much longer. Previously, the group had left the NWA in 1963, but soon rejoined by the turn of the new decade in 1971. When Vince Jr seized control from his father, he decided to break away from the Alliance all over again. That happened in late-1983, which coincided with Iron Sheik becoming WWF Champion.
Thus, Sheiky baby was a true first. He was the original and first out and out WWF World Champion of the era. In retrospect, McMahon probably would've preferred it had that distinction gone to new poster boy Hulk Hogan, but nope - Sheik beat him to it. You just know that had to put a big ol' smile on his face! Take that, Hulkster. Sheik = number one. Stay humble etc etc.
Seriously though, this was historically significant. Prior champs like Bob Backlund and often Bruno Sammartino had been promoted under the NWA banner despite being WWF titleholders. Sheik wasn't, and neither was Hogan once he supplanted the heel as champion. This was truly a brand new era for the promotion, one that let them stand on their own merits away from the sometimes-restrictive Alliance and its members.
WWE's top prize would never be beholden to another organisation ever again. It's amazing to think that Iron Sheik was on top when this change was made. That sounds like the answer to a particularly obscure trivia question. So, if it comes up in a pub quiz, you're welcome!
