13. Chris Benoit

Pros:

1. Arguably the best technical wrestler on the WWE roster

2. Total workhorse

3. Helped build the stars of the future

Cons:

1. Wasn’t always that charismatic

2. His lone World Heavyweight Championship run was more of a ‘pat on the back’ than a sign of things to come

3. The controversies surrounding his last days

Benoit is the most controversial wrestler in modern wrestling. He was a wrestling technician the likes of which might never be seen again, and despite his lack of promo ability and natural charisma, he was a celebrated workhorse who achieved his dream by good old hard work.

However, Benoit’s actions in 2007 made 'pro wrestling' an ugly term. Eyebrows were raised when someone would proclaim themselves wrestling fans, and people would follow up with the question, “how can you support wrestling after Benoit killed his family and then hanged himself?”

In truth, this could very well be the reason why mainstream media doesn’t pick up on WWE in the same way it used to, and why some elites in polite society look down on it (and its fans). As much as Benoit’s fans try and celebrate the man’s in-ring accomplishments, and separate the wrestler’s career from the man’s actions, for many more people, that simply won’t happen.

Ultimately, Benoit’s name will only be ever whispered in hushed tones in WWE, as his actions have forever tarnished his legacy and incredible wrestling abilities.
