50 Things You Learn Binge-Watching Every WWE WrestleMania
22. Michael Cole’s Match Time Is Staggering
You'll probably never see something like this again, and with good reason. Putting non-wrestlers in the ring is fine when they're not expected to go long and/or if they've got a story fans are into. For every perfectly acceptable example, there are often 10 bad ones. Michael Cole vs. Jerry Lawler would be one of the worst offenders. It's astonishing that this got just shy of 14 minutes bell to bell.
That was around 90 seconds less than 'Mania XXVII's main event. Tack on entrances, and this was one of the longest segments on the entire show - the biggest of WWE's 2011. That's incredible given that Michael f'n Cole was involved. Even he'd criticise Vince McMahon's decision making in interviews afterwards. There's no way Cole deserved to chew up this much time at WrestleMania. Not a chance.
There have been a lot of gimmicks other wrestlers hated over the decades, but few could've received the scathing looks Michael's heel announcer gig got. Lawler getting his first ever 'Mania match might've taken some of the heat off the pair for being on the show at all, but it's still outrageous that they were handed this amount of time. It was longer than Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio and even Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio for the World Title!
Wade Barrett could well end up wrestling a longer bout vs. Drew McIntyre if he comes out of retirement after all (which could've happened by the time you read this), but he was an accomplished wrestler before becoming a commentator. Cole wasn't. Even he thought this was too much.
