48. It’s Sad To See Andre Struggle At ‘Mania III

By 1987, towering monster Andre The Giant was a physical shell of his former self. Ravaged by pain brought on by his immense size, Andre lived an agonising existence day to day. Travelling from show to show put too much strain on his body, so The Giant pretty much called time on his in-ring career. That's when Vince went to ask his old friend for a favour.

McMahon revealed on the Netflix docuseries about his life and career that he wanted Andre to put Hulk Hogan over in the main event of WrestleMania III because he realised that'd be one of the biggest attractions ever. At first, Andre said no, but he'd cave after some gentle prodding and the promise of a huge payoff. Seeking a way to minimise the pain, The Giant debuted a new black singlet so he could hide a back brace underneath and give himself some support.

Watching the match all these years on with that context is rather sad. It's clear that Andre could barely put one foot in front of the other without hurting himself. He soldiered on to help Vince and Hulk out, and for what might well be one final big pay day. That wouldn't prove to be the case (Andre wrestled a limited schedule until 1991, and then worked some bouts outside the WWF in '92), but he couldn't continue testing his massive frame much longer.

There isn't much joy to be had in anything beyond the opening staredown and Hulk dropping a leg to retain the WWF Title. Revisiting Andre's pained expressions and 'turtle on its back' selling will tug at your heart strings a little.
