Domestic abuse is a serious topic and isn't something fans want to even think about when tuning into a pro wrestling show. Let's be real here: There's no way the industry could ever be trusted to handle something like this sensitively or well. That's why millions were stunned when Randy Savage slapped Torrie Wilson on the 5 July 1999 Nitro.

Look, male-on-female violence had been done before in wrestling. That's not the issue. The problem is that Savage was being written as an abusive character who indulged in this sort of behaviour without consequences. On screen, Torrie laughed. Either she didn't know the slap was coming, or she corpsed live on TV.

Randy rag-dolled Gorgeous George out of the room after hitting Wilson too.
