6 Short-Lived WWE Gimmick Matches You Forgot The Undertaker Innovated

The Undertaker's WrestleMania IX battle with Giant González may not be remembered all that fondly, but the rest of their feud is barely remembered at all. Despite 'Taker picking up a DQ victory at their first collision, the pair's rivalry carried on for nearly another five months, eventually culminating in the summer of 1993.

Being a larger-than-life rivalry (on paper at least), WWE needed a larger-than-life concept to bring it to an emphatic end so they once again went to The Deadman's supernatural well to come up with a suitably awe-inspiring conclusion. As a result, we witnessed the giants clash in the first-ever Rest In Peace match at SummerSlam.

To this day, it's still a struggle to understand what a Rest In Peace match actually was. Unlike 'The Phenom's other gimmick matches, there was no eerie object for him to place his opponent inside, and there was no unnerving specialised ending. Instead, it was nothing more than a slow-paced No Holds Barred match that just so happened to have a black wreath at ringside. Oh yeah, and it ended via pinfall too.

Other than Paul Bearer's amazing cameo at the end, this one has practically faded from memory altogether. Perhaps it was overshadowed by the pair's first controversial battle, or maybe the concept's complete lack of creativity left viewers uninspired. Either way, you would think that a match named after 'Taker's most iconic catchphrase would be a little less nondescript.
