6 Short-Lived WWE Gimmick Matches You Forgot The Undertaker Innovated
5. Coffin Match
During the summer of 1992, 'Taker became embroiled in a feud with 'The Ugandan Giant' Kamala. Following their brief contest at SummerSlam, which ended via DQ, things took a dark turn as 'The Phenom' and Paul Bearer came up with a frightening new type of match designed to put the exclamation point on this rivalry: the Coffin match.
The match stipulated that, in order to win, you first had to pin your opponent, then roll them into the coffin and nail the lid shut. While The Undertaker managed to do this with relative ease at Survivor Series 1992, it didn't change the fact that it was an unnecessarily drawn-out format that was actually quite problematic. What would have happened if Kamala fought back when being placed inside the coffin? Would 'Taker have had to pin him again, or was the match already over at this stage?
The match itself wasn't exactly a showstopper and it's easy to see why WWE would permanently adopt the much simpler format of the Casket match. Having said that, this was an entertaining and gimmicky product of its time that can still be enjoyed today and, at the very least, should be respected for paving the way for its superior successor.
