5. All’s Well With New Day?

There are two ways to view Monday’s backstage segment involving Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods as they talked about their recent tension over Odyssey Jones teaming with them.

The two all but demolished the fourth wall in saying the quiet part out loud as they noted that they can talk to each other like grown men about their disagreements and communicate about what they’re thinking and feeling. They observed that they’ve been friends and teammates for a decade, so a simple misunderstanding wasn’t going to lead to their demise.

Woods also noted that he watched the video from last week’s match and saw that Jones was indeed closer to Kofi for the tag, which is what originally set him off during the bout.

All of this could be in service of kiboshing that storyline, burying it with very frank talk and moving on – Jones was nowhere to be seen Monday night, and no tension was teased. However, it also could be a coy way to play to those fans making those same observations while throwing them off the scent of a fracture in the New Day so when it comes, it actually hits.

Either way, it’s refreshing to hear wrestling characters acknowledging that simple misunderstandings shouldn’t instantly lead to a breakup, which is so often what happens.
