6 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE NXT UK (18 March)
1. Never Bet Against An Ace
Jordan Devlin's Cruiserweight Championship defence against Trent Seven was excellent, and it needed to be. There was an abundance of anticipation coming into this one surrounding Seven's weight loss to reach the 205-pound weight limit. Thankfully, they didn't let down.
Straight out the gate, both champion and challenger were on edge, with a snap dragon suplex at ringside being executed by Trent mere minutes into the match. You knew this one was going to be special. That was only the beginning.
Two major stories played out here; Devlin focused his onslaught on Seven's injured back by stretching him around the ring post and cinching in the Four Leaf Clover, and Seven's drastic weight loss allowing him to add new weapons to his arsenal. A Diamond Dust, an attempted corkscrew senton, and a neat suicide dive were all brought out here. The NXT UK founding father didn't want the Cruiserweight Championship. He needed it.
The closing sequence of this was also tremendous. Seven looked to have it won with a BirmingHammer, only for 'The Irish Ace' to place his foot under the ropes at the last possible second. A thumb to the eye, a Devlin Side Suplex (garnering an incredibly close near-fall), and a 450 splash to the back secured Jordan the three count he needed to head into his imminent Santos Escobar title unification bout.
Devlin's Cruiserweight Championship defences are always a highlight of NXT UK, but this one took was the cherry on the cake. It was exquisite from bell to bell. It just keeps getting better, as we presumably have Devlin vs. Escobar happening at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver on 7 and 8 April. For now, we have this match to relish.
