4. Gunther Overcomes Kofi Onslaught

After seeing his New Day tag partner Xavier Woods sidelined and his dreams of repeating as King of the Ring dashed, happy-go-lucky Kofi Kingston had no place on Raw Monday night, and thankfully, he was nowhere to be seen.

Kingston didn’t give Gunther an opportunity to get into the ring before he jumped the Ring General and battered him, all before the bell. But once the match started, Gunther showed that he was clearly the superior athlete, battering Kofi’s back and leveling the playing field over the course of the contest.

Kofi was driven by revenge, but Gunther was driven by a desire to become King of the Ring, and he prevailed. There was no shame in Kingston losing, as he took the fight directly to Gunther, but he just came up short, as nearly everyone else has during the past two years.

For Gunther, the win signified a seemingly inevitable march toward the finals and a new career achievement for the Ring General. Overcoming Kofi’s pre-match attack served as a warning to future opponents that even in an unfair fight, Gunther can prevail.
