6 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE SmackDown (July 31)
1. Commentary's Heavy-Handedness With Big E
Big E's match against The Miz was absolutely fine in-ring, as expected, but both the booking and presentation must be questioned.
Firstly, it was weird that Miz was chosen as E's proving ground. He's been a tag-team heel for a while now, and isn't the singles star he once was. Secondly, Michael Cole and Corey Graves went too far with their commentary of the situation. They made it seem like the New Day man was a novice in one-on-one matches.
The dude is a former Intercontinental Champion, for crying out loud. Though it's an easy sell to suggest that he'd be out of sorts without Kofi Kingston or Xavier Woods by his side, pretending that he's some singles match rookie is ridiculous. This neither rewards long time fan knowledge nor does Big E any favours.
WWE must strike a better balance here. Explaining that E has grown so used to working tag matches that he might occasionally struggle in long bouts is dandy, but it's not like that match with Miz was his first time flying solo.
