Gunther’s promo work really needs to be studied, as it has become a bigger part of his game than what brought him to the dance – his in-ring work.
The Ring General visited Jey Uso in the locker room Monday night and reiterated his argument to the World Heavyweight Champion: Jey is putting in a great effort to be a good champion, but he listens to his heart too much, is selfless when he should be selfish, and that will eventually cost him.
Jey’s selflessness – the desire to run down to ringside to help his friends, to join Cody Rhodes in teaming up against John Cena and Logan Paul just two days before his world title match against Gunther – is going to cost Uso. “None of that is the business of the World Heavyweight Champion,” Gunther declared. “One week until the party’s over.”
What really is remarkable here is how Gunther is a clear-headed heel, recognizing all of Jey’s virtuous characteristics, but seeing them as negatives because they could very well cost him the title. The heel doesn’t need to be delusional; he just needs to see the world through a different lens.
Here’s hoping their match next week exceeds their WrestleMania 41 clunker.
