Don’t be mistaken: Iyo Sky versus Asuka is a welcome addition to the Backlash card and very much should be a highlight of the upcoming PLE. It should have been part of WrestleMania 42.

However, there has to be some acknowledgement of the sheer stupidity of WWE’s inexplicable, callous roster cuts on Friday, and this is probably the best place.

Kairi Sane had been an integral part of the Iyo/Asuka feud, torn between her longtime friend Iyo and her torturous senpai, seemingly being put in a position to finally choose a side for good. But before the story could reach its climax, WWE released Kairi, short-circuiting the angle and forcing the announcers to give a ham-fisted “Asuka is very unhappy and it will be a long time before the sempai sees her charge again” to write her off.

The Backlash match will be solid, but this was one of those rare times when a special referee or other “neutral observer” angle could have worked. Instead, WWE ensured that fans will just chant, “We want Kairi!” whenever the two are on screen, as they did Monday.

Penny-pinching idiots.
