3. Generic Heel #847

It’s no secret that WWE is in need of good, top-level heels right now, but that doesn’t mean you try to shoehorn people into boring roles… especially when they’re capable of being so much more.

Big Cass made his return to WWE after weeks of hype by attacking Je’Von Evans after a match against Ethan Page. He later conducted a backstage interview where he cut a cookie-cutter promo about being left for dead for eight years and having to work to get back to the company. He told Evans that it was nothing personal, that he was the first – but far from the last – of bodies that he was going to stack.

If you’re familiar with Cass, he is the rare case of a big man who has a ton of charisma and a great sense of humor, a natural persona that engages with crowds and can make them laugh without really trying.

For Cass to come back after vignettes promising redemption for his dismal turn as a singles star eight years ago, and just do the generic heel beatdown and “I’m here to stack bodies” promo is disappointing. Any heel could cut that promo. Only Cass could cut a Big Cass promo. They stripped away what made him unique and reintroduced him as the same bland heel he was in 2018.

Of course, it’s just one week in and things could rapidly change. We’re not campaigning for him to be a goofy babyface again, but if he’s going to be a factory settings monster heel, it’s going to be a tremendous, boring waste of talent. Time will tell, but this first effort didn’t inspire a ton of confidence.
