2. Funko Pop

You just know some writer in WWE creative was vibrating with enthusiasm at the lyrics they drafted for Joe Hendry to perform during his song about JD McDonagh on Monday night.

Hendry unveiled a new song on Raw suggesting that McDonagh’s huge head is the result of his mother getting it on with a guy with a Funko Pop head. Cue a guy with said Funko Pop head wearing a “JD’s Dad” T-shirt.

The song itself was… whatever. It felt half-baked and mostly inoffensive, but it also fell way short of being memorable. But because this is WWE, we had to dial up the dumb.

Je’Von Evans made his way out mid-match, wearing the Funko Pop head. To make matters worse, he then headbutted Dominik Mysterio down just days before Dirty Dom is supposed to defend his AAA Mega Championship at AAA’s biggest show of the year.

Keep in mind that Evans was supposedly turning over a more serious, aggressive side due to his feud with Big Cass, and here he was yukking it up and using props like a fun-loving guy who loves to have fun.

The match itself was nothing at all, lasting only a few minutes and speeding to a finish once the Funko Pop head appeared.

The funny thing is that saying JD’s dad is a life-sized Funko Pop is a legit funny line, but WWE took what would have worked as a multi-week joke and crammed everything into five minutes of TV time. They should have had Hendry make the comment in a promo or interview to plant the seed, then maybe repeat it in front of a live crowd the following week. Then they could roll out Hendry’s song.

The prop head gimmick was a take-it-or-leave-it deal, but there were better ways to roll this out than just having Evans awkwardly skip out to his theme music while wearing the head.
