6 Ups And 2 Downs From WWE NXT (May 25)
4. The First Hour’s In-Ring Quality
There was a lot to like about NXT's first hour.
It followed on from Raw's rather...unexpected focus on pure wrestling by delivering back-to-back corkers that you should go out of your way to see. The aforementioned women's tag bout was scorching and dramatic, and the technical wizardry of Pete Dunne vs. Bobby Fish harkened back to some of the latter's old ROH battles.
Dunne now moves on to face Kyle O’Reilly and Johnny Gargano in a Triple Threat next week. Win that and he'll earn an NXT Title shot against Karrion Kross at In Your House. Does that work? In-ring, absolutely, but WWE might have to do more to present Pete as a likeable challenger for the definitely-villainous Kross.
This week's show was a good start, and it was packed with great matches. Things got a little squash match heavy in the second hour (before the lengthy main), but the first? Man, that was a nice tag-into-singles flow they had going on there.
