If you needed a reminder, it has been two-and-a-half years since Finn Balor last held gold in WWE, and that was only for one day.

That drought ended Sunday when Balor overcame the odds and defeated Intercontinental Champion Bobby Lashley and hype man Lio Rush by pinning Rush. It was a classic 2-on-1 handicap match, with Lashley doing 98% of the work and keeping manager Rush out of the ring.

But it was Lio’s ego that spelled doom, as he tagged himself in, lost the advantage and got hit with a Coup de Grace for the loss. Afterward, Lashley took out his frustration on Rush with a massive spinebuster.

For Finn, this is a big deal, as he is the type of wrestler who could benefit from holding the title. If he’s allowed to defeat other challengers and have a decent reign, it could help establish him as more than an undersized underdog into more of a player on the roster.
