6 Ups And 7 Downs From WWE No Mercy 2017

2. Plan 9 From WWE

Roman Reigns

“OK everyone, this time Roman Reigns will be ‘over’ with the fans.”

Can you imagine someone pitching the John Cena/Reigns feud and saying that? Roman defeated and potentially retired the Undertaker at WrestleMania, which was the latest failed attempt to turn him into a made man, so having him beat Cena in their first one-on-one encounter would work, right? Right?

The announcers sure sold it as a changing of the guard. It was more than saying that the ring was now Roman’s yard. They called it the biggest win of his career, a defining victory. Cena even gave his endorsement by raising Roman’s hand afterward.

The match itself was good, but not the epic encounter you would have expected or thought they would deliver. And billing it as a changing of the guard didn’t help matters, as Roman basically punched and punched and punched while absorbing Cena’s offense. Again, a good match, but it certainly didn’t feel like Roman had ascended the mountain to become The Guy in WWE.

But hey, maybe this time, fans will respect Reigns’ achievements and position in WWE!
