6 Ups And Downs From Last Night's WWE Raw (Dec 29)

4. Edge & Christian

Seeing Edge & Christian together again was a reminder of WWE€™s glory days during the Attitude Era, when even midcard tag teams were memorable and could carve out a niche for themselves. But it also served as a reminder of a major difference between WWF then and WWE now: promos and scripting. Edge & Christian come from an era where promos weren€™t scripted word-for-word like they are today. WWE superstars today are handed fully formed promos that they then deliver verbatim (or nearly verbatim), letting some writer shape their character. In the days of E&C, they€™d go out and talk. Some might have forgotten, but as gifted as they are today, Edge & Christian were far from good talkers when they debuted. In fact, they rarely spoke in the beginning and were horrible when they first did. But they went out there and kept trying, and they eventually struck gold with many of the idiosyncrasies that fans still remember today: kazoos, five-second poses and generally reeking of awesomeness. Does anyone genuinely think that a WWE writer today could have come up with any of Edge & Christian€™s schtick? Is there any wonder why when Rock, Edge, Austin, Foley, Michaels and others show up that they are on a completely different level promo-wise than the current roster? It was great to see Edge & Christian, and hopefully they remind WWE that originality counts for something.
