6 Ups And Downs From Last Night's WWE Raw (Dec 29)

5. Politics And Wrestling Still Don€™t Mix

Vince McMahon can€™t help take a jab at the U.S. government and let his GOP flag fly whenever he gets a chance. The problem is, unless political humor is being done on late-night television shows, it doesn€™t really work. That€™s especially true on a wrestling program. Monday night, WWE showed an establishing shot of the White House to show Raw was in Washington, D.C. This prompted Michael Cole to mention that the new Congress will begin €œmuch to the chagrin of President Obama.€ Then JBL chimed in with, €œThe best thing for this country would be if Congress stayed on vacation.€ While some viewers are politically active (and might even have similar views), no one tunes in to WWE Raw to listen to any kind of political commentary. Period. Professional wrestling is escapism from the real world. We don€™t need to hear Vince€™s distaste for the federal government through the announcers. Just stop.

Scott is a former journalist and longtime wrestling fan who was smart enough to abandon WCW during the Monday Night Wars the same time as the Radicalz. He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
