6 Ways To Save The Women's Evolution
5. Acknowledge Women As WWE Superstars
I don't know what it is, but Mick Foley's obsession with celebrating "the women" doesn't quite sit right with me.
The problem in obsessing over the achievements of women in wrestling is a by-product of societal norms and conversational language. In this supposedly enlightened time, in all aspects of life, we like to throw up a big "you go, girl", whenever a woman is doing something that a man would ordinarily be at the forefront of.
We see it in politics and in the arts, but more than anywhere, you're likely to witness attention drawn to the sex of an athlete if she is female. Plain and simple: Women can do anything men can do.
Sasha and Charlotte were arguably on their way to making a shift, as their rivalry unraveled. Yet, as soon as we got to an important milestone at Hell in a Cell, a point is made of "women" kicking the goals.
We have to acknowledge and celebrate the trials and triumphs of women in the industry. But just as 'Divas' were finally recognised as 'WWE Superstars' in April, the first step towards change is accepting the natural reflection of equality in the modern era.
