6 WrestleMania Title Matches That Should Have Been Triple Threats

The least celebrated of the Rock-Austin trilogy, the previous months of WWE programming had been centred around ‘The Great One’s’ feud with Mankind and their back-and-forth swapping of the WWE Championship in a series of brutal yet brilliant matches.

One of the three faces of Foley was red hot off the back of his first World Title triumph in December 1998 - the ‘Foley wins the title’ episode of RAW that helped swing the Monday Night Wars. After losing the belt for a second time in 46 days, he stayed around the title scene but ended up being wasted at ‘Mania as a Special Referee for the Rock-Austin main event, beating The Big Show earlier the night in a seven-minute match to earn the stripes.

Because of Vince McMahon’s victory in the 1999 Royal Rumble match, which was effectively renounced in short order, WWE had a free pass creatively to throw anybody into the title picture, and Foley’s work in the proceeding months was worthy of that main event spot.

‘The Hardcore Legend’ would go on to headline WrestleMania 12 months later, but this should have been the time that he headlined on ‘The Grandest Stage of Them All’.
