6 Wrestling Screwjobs Other Than THAT One
1. Wendi Richter Vs. The Spider Lady
Montreal was not Vince McMahon's first rodeo. No, he had dabbled in screwjobbery way back in 1985, and for the pettiest of reasons.
Wendi Richter was an integral part of the WWF Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection, and she solidified her place in women's wrestling history when she ended the near-thirty-year reign of The Fabulous Moolah on MTV's 1984 special The Brawl to End It All.
She also began pressing McMahon for better pay, refusing to sign a contract extension until she was fairly remunerated. Supposedly, right before her title defense in Madison Square Garden in November of 1985, she was asked to sign a new contract immediately. Richter refused, asking that she be given time to actually, you know, read the damn thing before she signed.
That wasn't good enough for McMahon, so he went with Plan B.
Richter headed out to the ring for her match with The Spider Lady, realizing instantly that it was Moolah in disguise, and something was up. But she continued the match regardless, confident that she could handle Moolah.
What she couldn't handle, though, was the referee, who counted her shoulders down for a three-count even though she kicked out of a small package attempt at one. The bell rang, and Richter knew she'd been screwed.
She unmasked Moolah and tried to continue the match, but the ref wouldn't count her pin attempt. Moolah was announced the winner, but Richter -- rightfully so -- refused to give up her belt, and went straight from the ring to the airport, still in her ring gear.
She wouldn't appear in WWE again until her Hall of Fame induction over two decades later.
