Carlito should have been a monumental star for World Wrestling Entertainment.

Debuting in late 2004, the second-generation competitor defeated John freaking Cena in his debut match to win the United States Championship. Almost immediately, though, it became apparent that his in-ring skills were did not quite match up to his undeniable charisma. He was cocky, arrogant and brash but, more importantly, he was a step behind Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero and the rest of the SmackDown brand.

After moving to Raw, the question was no longer whether or not he had the makings of a star; he had shown as much in matches with Shelton Benjamin, Johnny Nitro, Ric Flair and the aforementioned Cena. No, the questions centred on Carlito's passion to be the best.

In 2007, Flair even cut a truth-based promo on Carlito during a live episode of Raw in which he questioned his heart. While he would rebound and eventually form a very entertaining tag team with brother Primo, he had descended down the ranks far too quickly to ever be considered the credible main event attraction so many once thought he may be.

After his release in 2010, Carlito returned to Puerto Rico, where he has had considerable success working for, and with, his father Carlos Colon.

The best way for WWE to utilise him at this point in his career is a solid midcarder with name recognition. He has natural charisma, as witnessed at the Hall of Fame in 2014, where he stole the show with a few digs at management and WWE Creative while inducting his dad.

Letting him host his Carlito's Cabana talk show while working with the likes of Neville, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens and Cesaro would best suit him. Is he a headliner? No, but he can be a solid addition to a roster full of extraordinary wrestlers, of which there were few when he was last inside a Vince McMahon-owned ring.
