7 Matches Where John Cena Went FULL WORKRATE
1. 23 April 2007 Raw (vs. Shawn Michaels)
Dear readers, meet an example of twin workrate dialled up to 11.
John Cena and Shawn Michaels had already worked wonders at WrestleMania 23 when they marched into London's Earl's Court over in the UK for the 23 April 2007 edition of Raw. Little did anybody clutching a ticket stub know that they were about to be taken on a 55-minute thrill ride by a psychological master called HBK and a newer star who was raring to prove that he could hang in such a lengthy setting.
Close to a full hour later, both workers were exhausted and so were those around ringside. There weren't enough stars to chuck at this match, to tell the truth. It wasn't an 'all gas, no brakes' effort that'd do Jacob Fatu's catchphrase proud, but the way both picked their moments to hit the accelerator must be applauded. Working that in and around TV ad breaks was also a challenge.
At the time, this was considered arguably the finest example of storytelling and pure wrestling skill that'd graced WWE's flagship in years. Michaels was known for producing quality, but there would've been a ton of applause reserved for Cena behind the curtain - he'd come through by matching Shawn every step of the way, which isn't something just any scrub can do.
Psychology, action, drama, recent history, an 'old master vs. young lion' plot, excellent commentary, a hot crowd. Yes, this had it all. Quite simply, it's one of the greatest WWE matches to ever take place abroad, and it'd take some bout to top it in the future.
