It doesn't help that Dean Ambrose was going nowhere before this latest tag-team with Rollins. Since moving to Raw just after WrestleMania 33, the ex-Intercontinental Champion has done little of note aside from this current storyline. In fact, he was at real risk of being tagged with the 'career mid carder' brush just a few months ago.

A damning verdict of WWE's topsy turvy booking style, SmackDown's top draft pick just last summer didn't seem like a former WWE Champion when he bounded onto Raw post-Superstar Shakeup in April. Worse, it didn't seem like Raw's writers had anything for him; left without a satisfactory feud to get stuck into, Ambrose was once again programmed against The Miz despite fans already seeing that on SmackDown.

Ambrose wasn't ready for The Shield when WWE started talking about his history with the group again. Dressing up as a teddy bear and outsmarting The Miz during comical segments in June did little to inspire feelings that the unhinged Shield mouthpiece of before was on the comeback trail.
