WWE were hit by an injury crisis following the 2001 King of the Ring, where Austin and Angle both broke bones in their back, the latter in his famous street fight with Shane McMahon.

Benoit also broke his neck that night to join Triple H on the treatment table, while The Rock was filming in Hollywood and not due back for another month. WWE could not afford to have two more main event talents sidelined while trying to build such a major storyline.

While Austin and Angle were unable to compete for several weeks, WWE got the best they could out of them by using the pair in comedy sketches backstage with Vince McMahon.

The two had already showcased their comedic chops separately (Austin at McMahon’s expense and Angle alongside Edge and Christian) but the chemistry between them was absolutely brilliant as they vied for Vince's attention, both wanting to be his number-one guy. Guitar playing, hugs and cowboy hats; everything they tried was hilarious.
