7 Positive Things About WWE's 'Invasion' Angle
6. The Push... Of Jericho
Chris Jericho began the Invasion angle as a second-tier player - a recognisable face to throw to The Alliance for beatdowns while protecting WWE’s biggest names. He ended it as the first-ever Undisputed Champion thanks to hard work, and a little bit of good fortune.
That WCW was missing star power will be the eternal shame of this programme, but had it been overcrowded with established stars then Jericho may not have received such spotlight.
It was no less than Y2J deserved after a stellar first half of 2001, in which he was involved in three matches rated 4.75 stars by Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, either as Chris Benoit’s opponent or tag team partner.
Stone Cold’s enforced switch to make The Alliance more credible, and long-term injuries to Triple H and Benoit created a space for Jericho at the top of the card. Boy did he take it.
