7 Reasons Eva Marie Should Be WWE SmackDown's First Women's Champion

If WWE is consistently guilty of anything, it’s that their creative department is notoriously inept when it comes to writing for women. It feels like the department is populated by writers who have very little idea of how real females actually conduct themselves, nor any interactions of their own to draw from. While I’m sure this is not the case – after all we’ve all heard the “you’re writing for an audience of one” speech – the track record of the women in WWE doesn’t do much to disprove it.

Feuds are usually started to due to envy or catty behavior, two women are constantly fighting over the same guy, and the ladies switch alignments from heel to face and back again almost as frequently as Big Show. It does them no favors when trying to get over with the fanbase. Take a look at how watered down Sasha Banks has become since being called up. While she’s still massively popular, she’s a mere glimmer of her former “Boss” self that she portrayed down in NXT, toning down her trademark swagger in an effort to…well, I don’t exactly know.

Outside of the top two or three women, there isn’t much character development to be found. Alicia Fox has been a generic CAW outside of a brief stint where she was crazy; the bad, cringey kind of crazy like Jared Leto’s Joker too, and she’s the longest tenured female in WWE. Naomi got some glow-in-the-dark paint, so I guess that’s a start. Charlotte is a female version dad of her dad with a fraction of his charisma, and Becky’s only given a chance to show any real personality on her own social media.

That’s why Eva Marie stands out so much among the women. Of the three recent NXT call-ups, only Nia Jax has been given anything resembling a gimmick – the female Brock Lesnar basically – while Carmella and Alexa Bliss have joined the rest of the girls in directionless purgatory. Hopefully the brand split will change all that but things aren’t looking great so far.
