7 Reasons I Regret Staying Up To Watch WWE Payback 2016

More so than most tropes in professional wrestling, this really needs to stop.

Bret 'Hitman' Hart had one of the most impressive and important careers in professional wrestling history. In a world of Hulk Hogans and Ultimate Warriors he broke out and became a megastar on the back of his wrestling ability and popularity. He also became one of the first to become a major player in a post-tag team career. Bret Hart is one of the most important pro wrestlers of all time, full stop.

Which makes it all the more infuriating that his career in WWE is seemingly going to forever be remembered for one night in Montreal, where the company he had been so loyal to for so long betrayed him with his own move in his own country.

The finish to that infamous match has been reprised far too often in professional wrestling, and it came up again last night as Charlotte locked Natalya in the sharpshooter and Charles Robinson immediately called for the bell. Robinson himself is closely tied to the Flair family, which whilst it may nod to a reason for the finish also begs the question as to why he was in charge in the first place.

Ultimately, the fact that the Montreal Screwjob still gets brought up and reprised when really it needs to be consigned to history is frustrating and really quite sad.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
