WWE deserve at least some credit for trying something totally different post-WrestleMania 33. Following the tiresome Bray Wyatt vs. Randy Orton storyline, it would've been even more tedious for creative to revert to type and predictably book John Cena in the champion role to see SmackDown through a traditional post-'Mania lull.

Instead, it was Jinder Mahal who was elevated. This was done partly to offer something new to fans and (let's face it) also because Cena was away filming TV shows. Would Mahal have been promoted to the top role he enjoys now without Cena's outside commitments? All signs point to no.

Mahal may have become a challenger for Cena, but only so he could give John someone to beat. Despite predictions Cena will topple Jinder and win a historic 17th WWE Title soon, the 'Modern Day Maharaja' has been afforded a title win his hard work and determination definitely warranted.
