7 Reasons Why Sting Is WCW's Biggest Ever Star

3. He Was The Main Babyface Rival Of Ric Flair

Every great hero needs an awesome villain to go up against. It's true in the movies and it's true in wrestling too. Hogan had Piper, Austin had McMahon and Sting most definitely had Ric Flair as the biggest rival in his career. When Sting faced off with Flair at the first Clash of the Champions event in March of 1988 it was at a time in Sting's life when he really wasn't a top guy yet. He had a 45 minute draw with Flair that showed he could definitely get to that level. Two years later at the 1990 Great American Bash, Sting beat Flair clean for the NWA World Title and he officially became the biggest star in the company. Flair's rivalry with Sting lasted for years nearly 15 years in WCW. Right before Hulk Hogan came to WCW, Flair beat Sting to become the WCW Champion. Throughout the 1990s they were always facing off against each other. There were times when Flair was in a babyface role, but for the most part he was a heel so it made sense to put them in there. Their story ended on the final episode of Nitro on March 26, 2001. Flair wasn't in great shape so he wrestled in a t-shirt. The fans enjoyed seeing them do their trademark spots, but it was far from a great match. It was still cool to see Sting throw Flair off the top, fight out of the Figure Four Leglock, hit the Stinger Splash and win the match with the Scorpion Death Lock. When it was over, they hugged and gave us some finality on one of WCW's greatest rivalries.
