7 Reasons Why Sting Is WCW's Biggest Ever Star

2. He Didn't Talk Or Wrestle In 1997 And Was Still The Biggest Star

How could somebody go nearly a full year without saying one word on the microphone and wrestling only in the final week of December yet still have his spot as the top draw in the company? That's because it was Sting. He had the star power to pull it off. He's one of the only guys in wrestling history that could pull that off. Since Sting was doing the mysterious Crow gimmick he didn't need to talk. All he really did was kick people's ass when he needed to (usually Hulk Hogan's NWO cronies) and point his bat at people. That was enough for him. It made people tune in every week to see if he might talk or do something crazy. This was 1997 when WCW was beating WWE in the ratings on Monday nights. Sting was the biggest reason for it. When Sting finally wrestled Hulk Hogan on Starrcade it was December 28, 1997. He didn't wrestle a match before that the whole year. That's because he had a very nice contract in WCW. You probably know what happened at Starrcade. Sting should have beat Hulk Hogan clean for the WCW Title, but instead they messed it up with a controversial finish and Sting didn't really get to officially become "the man" like he should have been. Typical WCW. They always found a way to mess things up. Looking back at that year, it's pretty amazing that a guy could go without talking and barely wrestling, yet he was still the biggest babyface in the company.
