7 Reasons Why WWE And UFC Are In Competition

7. Both Use Promos To Sell Their Fights And Matches

If you're a boring fighter in UFC and you win all your fights you're going to do well. No question about that. However, the guys that really make it big are the ones that show a personality when they're in the ring, when they're at a press conference and even brawling at a public event like we saw recently. It's not like UFC is going to hand a fighter a script to say something controversial about his opponent as a way to drum up interest, but if you think about some of the fighters that are more successful it's their ability to talk that helps. A guy like Tito Ortiz was great at it. Chael Sonnen used to use lines from Superstar Billy Graham promos over 30 years and people would react like it was the coolest thing even though it really wasn't that original. Guys like Nick & Nate Diaz are both really good talkers. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson definitely had the gift of gab too. There are plenty of others too. Some UFC fighters can't really talk well. They let the fighting do the talking. Not being able to talk definitely hurts some of them, but since it's a sport in the end what really matters is that they win and hopefully can move up the ladder that way. In WWE we know what they're all about. They script the promos of their performers and they put them in positions to be stars. It's still something that is earned, at least most of the time. A fan might watch a Randy Orton promo against John Cena and get bored by it, but a 30 second interview from Ronda Rousey might sell them on a fight. That's how they might decide what they want to watch that particular weekend. Don't underestimate the power of the promo.
