7 Signs Wrestling Is Currently In A Recession

3. Lack Of A Mainstream Audience

Befunky 20130409 Light Raw Crowd Candl Wrestling, like any sport or particular form of entertainment, has a loyal and dedicated fan-base. These viewers support the product -- whether it be WWE, TNA, or any other company -- simply because they like wrestling. There will always be professional wrestling fans, however, they aren€™t always a large contingent. This relatively small and loyal fan-base is simply not enough for a company like WWE. They need a larger audience to tune in to their product, and as such, need to attract more casual fans to the program. The Rock €˜n€™ Wrestling and Attitude Eras were monumental successes in this department. Not only were diehard wrestling fans watching the ongoing shenanigans, but the everyday Joe Schmo (and even the people you would least expect) felt the need to see what was happening also. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaJ2d3IadrU While WWE is still incredibly popular among certain celebrities, it€™s doubtful many of them follow the product religiously. Like many other fans, the celebrities seen at major PPV events are often there because of nostalgia -- like countless people, they liked wrestling as a kid, but fell out of love with it at some point. This grouping is what WWE, and any wrestling promotion, should be after. A mainstream, casual audience may be looked down upon by hardcore fans, but they are absolutely needed for wrestling to once again enter a boom period. Without them, we are left in a slump like we are now. So, why do some fans turn away from the product?

Douglas Scarpa is a freelance writer, independent filmmaker, art school graduate, and pro wrestling aficionado -- all of which mean he is in financial ruin. He has no backup plan to speak of, yet maintains his abnormally high spirits. If he had only listened to the scorn of his childhood teachers, he wouldn't be in this situation.
