7 Signs WWE Is Planning A Women's Tag Division

5. The IIconics Have Always Been A Tag Team

Maybe WWE plans to split the SmackDown Women’s Championship in half like they did for LayCool back in 2010. If not, and they aren’t starting a tag division, I don’t understand why the Peyton Royce and Billie Kay have been booked as a two-person act both before, and after, their main roster call-up.

LayCool, the team they most closely resemble historically, had an advantage the IIconics don’t have. Michelle McCool and Layla didn’t come together until both women had established themselves as distinct singles characters. McCool had already held both the Women’s and Diva’s Championships, and Layla had won a Diva Search, and spent some time managing William Regal.

While both women started alone in the developmental world of NXT, it would be hard to argue that they were much beyond background players before being teamed up and becoming one of the most entertainingly obnoxious acts WWE has, The Iconic Duo (changed to The IIconics for apparent copyright reasons on SmackDown).

Kay and Royce are so easily identifiable as a tag team at this point, that casual fans can have a hard time telling which woman is which. It likely won’t last forever, but the creative approach they’re taking with these women has always pointed at a tight-knit tag team.
