7 Spine-Chilling WWE Commentary Calls

6. Michael Cole (Raw - 4 January 1999)

Mankind Title

Wait, Michael Cole? The same guy who annoyingly flits between impartial announcer and smug put-down artist without reason? Yes, and the very same who once became a show-ruining heel play-by-play man that spent most of the time telling fans the match they were watching sucked or calling Daniel Bryan a nerd.

In 1999, Cole was a young upstart commentator who (whilst rough) was giving it his best shot. He also happened to sell Mankind's first WWF Title win remarkably well, and he deserves more praise for it.

As a grinning Mick Foley hoisted the most famous title in pro wrestling above his head and revelled in the adulation of thousands, Cole spewed quite the poignant outburst. "Mankind has achieved his dream, and the dream of everyone else who's been told 'you can't do it'!". What a line, and what a way to sell an underdog success.

At that very moment, spines tingled with emotion and hearts beamed with pride. Mankind had done it, that kid who watched Snuka come off the cage in 1985 had captured the big one and, as Cole poetically put it, so had his biggest fans.
