7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1990

6. No Titles On The Line Hurt The Undercard Matches

It was another weak undercard, much like the 1989 Rumble was. Since WWE only did four PPVs in a year, they should have made the undercard stronger. There were no title matches on the show since World Champion Hulk Hogan and Intercontinental Champion Ultimate Warrior were both in the Rumble match. The tag champs were Andre The Giant & Haku (together known as The Colossal Connection), but they were both in the Rumble match too. Looking back on it, WWE probably should have put them in a tag title match just to give some flavor to the undercard. The undercard featured bad matches like the previous mentioned comedy showing from The Bushwhackers. There was also a brutal match with Brutus Beefcake and The Genius ending in a no decision, which was done to build up Beefcake's match with Mr. Perfect at WrestleMania 6. Ronnie Garvin beat Greg Valentine in a submission match that was okay. The crowd didn't seem that interested, though. In the last match before the main event, Jim Duggan beat the Big Boss Man by DQ after Boss Man attacked Duggan with the nightstick and didn't stop. Duggan ended up coming back with the 2x4 to make the fans happy. As the years went by, WWE did a better job of putting good matches in the undercard. This felt like a one match with only the Rumble match standing out as above average.
