7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1992

6. Roddy Piper Won His First And Only Singles Title

Roddy Piper was arguably the greatest heel in WWE in the 1980s when the company was thriving. He was main eventing shows with Hulk Hogan on a regular basis. He was a major part of the WrestleMania 1 tag match that headlined the show. When people think of wrestlers from the 1980s he is one of the first names that they think of. Based on his push, there's no question that Piper should have been WWE Champion at least once. It didn't happen, though. Apparently, Piper was against holding titles. He also was very stubborn about putting people over by getting pinned or submitting. It was some kind of old school mentality that he had where he just refused to do it. WWE worked around it and he was able to have a great career, but it was always weird how one of the best wrestlers ever had no titles for a long time. The lack of titles ended in 1992 when he challenged The Mountie for the coveted Intercontinental Title. Bret Hart dropped the IC Title two days earlier to The Mountie because he was allegedly sick and injured. Piper got the shot at Mountie. Their match wasn't very good at all, but the crowd was solidly behind Piper in the babyface role. Piper ended up winning the match in about six minutes with the sleeper hold. Post match, he used the cattle prod to shock The Mountie much to the delight of the crowd. The ovation for Piper's title was loud. He showed a lot of emotion when he won too. Great moment in wrestling history and in the career of one of WWE's best performers ever.
