7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1994

5. The Bret/Owen Story During Tag Title Match Was Awesome

The seeds for Owen turning on Bret were planted at Survivor Series 1993 when the Hart Brothers won an elimination match where Owen was the only one eliminated. He was upset after it was over. They patched things up and that led to this tag title match against The Quebecers. By the way, the Quebecers were managed by Johnny Polo, who came more well known as Raven. They had a really good match with the The Quebecers attacking the knee of Bret. There were all kinds of classic heel tactics used. It was great to watch and Bret was fantastic at selling the injury. Just when it looked like Bret could have made the hot tag to his brother Owen, he chose to put the Sharpshooter on Pierre instead. However when he tried to apply the move he collapsed to the mat. The ref ended up stopping the match because Bret wasn't in the condition to compete. It's not a finish you see often, but it made a lot of sense for this storyline. Post match, Owen freaked out about the loss. He verbally berated Bret and then he kicked Bret in the knee. Announcer Ted Dibiase said it was the smartest thing Owen had ever done. It was the start of Owen's heel turn and it led to massive boos for him. Bret was carried out of the ring while his status for the Rumble match was questionable the rest of the night. Lucky for us, Owen's greatness on this night didn't end there.
