7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1995

4. Diesel's Title Defense Against Bret Hart Was Good With A Weak Finish

Diesel's match with Bret Hart was a big test for him because it was the first time he had to defend the WWE Title on a PPV. It was a face vs. face, but Hart wrestled more of an aggressive style that was heel-like in a lot of ways. They had a really good back and forth match that went 28 minutes. A lot of people will be quick to rip on Diesel for not having a lot of great matches, but this one was awesome. Obviously Bret's going to get more credit as the better worker. That's fair. However, Diesel deserve a lot of praise too because they told a great story all match long. There was plenty of interference in this match with guys like Shawn Michaels and Owen Hart getting involved. Despite the interference, it was announced that the match must continue. For the finish, the ref got bumped and then a bunch of heels (Shawn, Owen, Backlund, Jarrett) entered the ring to attack the two babyface stars. The reason it was done that way is because Diesel had to retain the WWE Title and they didn't want Hart to lose either. It also teased the Hart/Backlund and Diesel/Michaels matches at WrestleMania 11. Fans hated the draw finish, but it was the right move based on the attacks on both performers. They hugged it out to end things when it was over. It was a great WWE Title match that is underrated.
