7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1998

6. Mike Tyson Was A Huge Star That WWE Was Smart To Sign

Timing is everything in wrestling. When WWE announced that they had signed Mike Tyson prior to the Royal Rumble it was a big deal. He was arguably the most athlete alive although not for a great reason. During Tyson's June 28, 1997 fight against Evander Holyfield for the WBA Title, he was losing the fight and he decided to bite Holyfield's ear. Blood started coming from the ear, so Tyson was disqualified with Holyfield declared the winner. Tyson ended up being suspended from boxing for over a year, so he needed something to do. WWE ended up paying Tyson around $3 million to be the special enforcer at WrestleMania 14 with his first appearance taking place at the Royal Rumble. At the event, he was shown sitting in the skybox enjoying the show. Following the Rumble match, Tyson was interviewed by Michael Cole from his skybox. He was all excited that Austin won the Rumble, but he actually messed up by calling him "Cold Stone" instead of "Stone Cold." Tyson did appear to be a big fan of WWE, but the "Cold Stone" thing will always live in infamy as a funny mistake he made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XutIU4m5mk The next night on Raw, Tyson had the shoving match with Austin that will go down as one of the greatest moments in Raw history. Signing him was a huge move by WWE. Tyson was a legit loose cannon, so of course he fit perfectly in WWE for that reason.
