7 Things You Learn Writing About WWE For A Living

7. You Never Know Who Is Reading

twittertwitterThe term "mark" is what they use in wrestling to describe a fan. It's not necessarily a derogatory term although you might hear a wrestler comment about marks in a bad way. If they get a reaction they don't desire then it usually happens that way. In a lot of cases, wrestlers are the biggest marks for themselves whether they want to admit it or not. Think about the life of a WWE superstar or diva. They are on the road constantly. In today's world where we have technology at our fingerprints at all times it's very easy for them to read what people are saying. Twitter is an easy way for them, but they might read news sites too. When I was in a bar with a wrestler after a show I asked him if he read about himself. He said he had set up Google alerts and that he checked all the time just to see what people were saying. It's smart. Think of it like market research. The fans are the consumers, so as a wrestler you should be interested to know what they're saying about you. One of the things I've learned from writing and being somewhat successful at it is that wrestlers are not afraid to interact with somebody. In some cases it led to friendships that I'm grateful for. Other times they might be angry because of something I wrote. They might email about something, but mostly it's via direct message on Twitter because then they don't have to give any info out. Sometimes it's a simple thank you or they might retweet, which is always cool. It's the nature of their job. Performers love attention. Wrestlers are no different. You truly never know who is reading.
