7 Things You Learn Writing About WWE For A Living

6. Once You Become A "Smart" Fan You Can Never Go Back

WWE.comWWE.comWhen you become a wrestling fan that knows how the business works you might be called a smart mark, a smark or simply a smart fan. You're one of those people that reads all the backstage news/rumours and basically checks up on the business on a daily basis. Once you become that person there's no going back to being that kid that is only casual fan. The only time I ever really took a "break" from reading a lot about wrestling news is shortly after the Chris Benoit murders in the summer of 2007. That really rocked me because I was such a fan of the guy. I couldn't watch another match of his for many years. Now I can, but it's still not the same. For about five or six months I barely watched WWE. Maybe I just needed the break or maybe I was done for good. What brought me back was the return of Chris Jericho and also the Ric Flair retirement storyline. By early 2008 I was back into it and ended up re-watching a lot of the late 2007 stuff I missed. While I don't personally know anybody that done it, I imagine that it would be very difficult to go from being a guy that reads about wrestling all the time to somebody that completely ignores it. Some may try it for weeks or months, but can they really do it? Seems doubtful to me. It's also one of those things that's hard to explain to casual wrestling fans that aren't into wrestling as seriously as we are. You either get it or you don't.
