At one point in the pod, AJ remarks that she's "afraid to think what she'd be like without" bi-polar, because she's used it as a strength for so long. This worried deGrasse, Nice and Dr. Heather Berlin a little, and it led to the biggest scientific debate on the episode.

Berlin said having bi-polar shouldn't define why AJ exhibits the positive traits she does, and argues that she could well have developed them without knowing of her mental illness at all. Sensing Lee is playing down her hard work a little too much, Nice echoes that sentiment by saying he believes AJ's crediting bi-polar for her achievements when she should be shining the light of praise on herself.

Their argument is a compelling one, and it does raise the question of how wearing one's mental health as a badge of honour can overshadow personal achievement. AJ doesn't seem to see it that way. She's grateful that her brain has been wired the way it has, and she recognises that being diagnosed when she was motivated her to empower her adult life.
