On the live event circuit and occasionally on television (such as the March 25, 2011 episode of SmackDown), McIntyre faced Edge during his first few years in WWE. This was likely WWE's way of trying to get him up to speed with what it'd take to become a headliner in the promotion. Back then though, Drew wasn't quite ready to take the ball and run with it.

In a reflective moment, McIntyre said during the podcast interview that he would get up too quickly from moves in anticipation of taking Edge's Spear. Excited by the finish and eager to get to it, he'd forget about selling so long as he was in position to take Edge's finisher. In retrospect, Drew pointed out that rushing like that was a mistake.

This came after Edge had told a story about a young Bray Wyatt (then known as Husky Harris) at SummerSlam 2010. Wyatt was too focused on not screwing up that he kept forgetting to breathe, so Edge had to remind him to relax and take his time.

McIntyre had made the same mistakes.
