5. Nobody Would Care About Chael Sonnen If Punk Walked Him To The Octagon?
It's well known that Punk is a huge UFC fan, and that UFC star Chael Sonnen is a huge professional wrestling fan. Sonnen sells his fights to the public by using tricks from wrestling, even lifting old 1970s promos from the likes of The Grappler word for word to hype his fights. He and Punk are also good friends, rebellious kindred spirits who are fans of one another's work. In January 2012, Sonnen was fighting Michael Bisping in a featured fight of a UFC On Fox show headlined by Rashad Evans v Phil Davis. It was the day before the Royal Rumble and the event was taking place in Punk's hometown of Chicago.Punk was WWE Champion at the time and thought that it could help get some last minute buys for the Rumble. Punk said that the UFC were fine with it but that, once again, Vince McMahon put the brakes on the idea, as he was not a proponent of the UFC, claiming that someone would die in the Octagon one day. However, Punk claims that, had he been granted his wish, that "no ones going to be talking about Chael, theyre going to be talking about the WWE Champion walking him to the Octagon." Chael Sonnen is one the most high profile and talked about UFC fighters of all time, given his sheer entertainment value and the way that he's captured the public's imagination. Furthermore, while there is a crossover of UFC and wrestling fans, having been to several UFC events myself, I know from personal experience that the majority of people who attend UFC shows are not wrestling fans. So while in Punk's mind, he'd have been the centre of attention, the truth of the matter is that many people in attendance wouldn't even notice that Sonnen had a new guy in his entourage, or would be asking who the tattooed guy with a title belt was. For him to dismiss Sonnen's impact on UFC fans is hugely disrespectful.
