Yes this didn’t matter in the end, as the fans carried Daniel Bryan into the main event of WrestleMania anyway, despite the WWE’s refusal towards the yes man. But it all started with one of worst fan backlashes ever at the year’s Royal Rumble. Big Dave had made his return and rode the wave of momentum, and backstage support, to punch his ticket for a main event showdown with Randy Orton. Standing in his way: the entire WWE universe.

The sheer fury pouring out of the fans as Daniel Bryan did not appear in the Rumble, even when the only thing anyone wanted to see was him reaching the top, was otherworldly. It sent everyone there and across the world, former stars and marks alike, into a meltdown. In the end, mountains were moved, the sky torn down, CM Punk walked out, before finally, the people’s champion had become WWE’s champion, and the Rock was nowhere to be seen. Despite all that however, nothing can erase the memory of this night and how the WWE short changed its fans.
