Going into Extreme Rules 2013, the story was that Ryback had turned heel on Cena just so he could get closer to the WWE Title. Both guys were hampered from the start though, because Ryback had just lost to Mark Henry at WrestleMania. WWE needed to quickly present the 'Big Guy' as someone who was on par with Cena.

An ankle injury to Cena that could have provided the ideal plot point was almost entirely ignored throughout despite being part of the pay-per-view build, but that oddly didn't hurt the match. There were big bumps aplenty, and this was way more exciting than Cena's pedestrian match with The Rock at 'Mania XXIX the month before.

Worked at a ferocious speed, Ryback vs. Cena also had the benefit of being a Last Man Standing match. Aside from that usual 10-count drama, it's clear to see Cena carrying the bulk of the match and leading Ryback through. That deserves more praise, because Cena was able to make an opponent without momentum look like a real threat.
